The area is a peninsula right next to the Pacific Ocean. It also comes complete with dramatic sandstone cliffs that’ll sure make the views outside your house a sight to behold. Point Loma is also one of the most historical places in San Diego, being the first-place European explorers landed on. In fact, the Point Loma community celebrates its unique claim to fame with the annual Cabrillo Festival, which honors the arrival of the explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in the area. Point Loma also has a distinguished history of military service, with it serving as a home to Fort Rosecrans, the Navy Coaling Station, and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
The area also has loads of amenities and events tailored to serving both the local community and the thousands of tourists the area attracts each year. Due to its great location and proximity to the sea, residents here can enjoy year-round fishing and yachting events. Surfing, boating, and general oceanside activities are right at your doorstep here in Point Loma. There is also the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park located on the western end of the area, here you can expect to catch a whale sighting or two while resting after a great day of yoga.
Also, a great attraction is the town’s yearly tradition of fantastic Christmas decorations, which has worldwide notoriety for being one of the country’s best.
Point Loma is also great for families. The schools in and around the area are some of the best in the county, and all of which are ready to cater to all learners, from toddlers to college students. There is also a public library in the area for residents to make use of; the Jean Jessop Hervey Public Library has a generous 25,000-square-feet of space for people to enjoy. The library also offers arts and craft classes, children’s storytime, and even after-school movies.
If you get hungry in the town, and you will with all the activities on offer, there are loads to choose from in terms of dining. There are local favorites like Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern specializing in American comfort food, Point Loma Seafoods offer dishes that take advantage of the various aquatic fare, and there is the Cesarina, an upscale brunch place with a distinctly Italian flare.
